There are many gemstones with a star effect, sapphire, spinel, ruby, chrysoberyl, moonstone, crystal, and many more, among which sapphire and ruby are the most common of star gemstones. There are three main types of star gemstones, four-shot starlight, six-shot starlight, and twelve-shot starlight. Among them, six-shot starlight is the most common starlight effect. For four-shot starlight, it is commonly found in chrysoberyl and moonstone, while six-shot starlight is very common in ruby sapphire and spinel and crystal. For twelve-shot starlight, it is very rare, especially the twelve-shot star sapphire with particularly obvious star line is very rare.

Ruby: Rubies can contain abundant rutile inclusions that intersect each other at a 60° angle, and are processed into cabochon-shaped gemstones to display six-star rays and occasionally double stars.

Sapphire: When a sapphire has a large amount of a fine mineral called rutile growing inside, the top of the polished convex gemstone will show six starrays, and this sapphire is called star sapphire.

Iolite: The internal inclusions of iolite are mainly hematite and goethite, and most of the particles are flake or needle-like, showing a starlight effect.

Garnet: The starlight effect is less common in garnets, and there are often four-shot starlight and occasionally six-shot starlight.

Aquamarine: The color of aquamarine is largely determined by the angle and light from which it is viewed, so it is cut in a very particular way and can also produce a star effect.

Spinel: Spinel crystals with a star effect are generally poor, and bright, sparkling faceted spinel is generally more popular in the market.

Diopside: Diopside with a star effect is mostly black in color.

Columnite: Some columnar with star effect, its crystals are smaller, and large crystals of more than 10 carats are mostly collected in museums.

Enstatite: The needle-like mineral inclusions inside the enstatite are arranged in parallel directions to produce a starlight effect, and cross stars are often seen.
